Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument
I awoke in the Chiricahuas to continuing rain and a forecast of clearing only after sunset — so, not yet a good day for White Sands. I remembered seeing an intriguing image of the Organ Mountains on the outskirts of Las Cruces, less than an hour's drive before White Sands...it was worth a try!
After a relatively short & rainy drive, I spent a frustrating heavy-cloud-covered afternoon exploring photo locations at the base of what the maps indicated was the Organs. I finally settled on a spot that at least promised to be a good place to park the van for the night. Happily, I awoke to a decent sunrise over mostly-revealed mountain peaks at a pretty good photographic location...
