Berber Villages
We left Fes and drove over the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in Ifrane for a night and having a wonderful hike & dinner with Thomas and Fazia of Journey Beyond Travel. We then continued over the High Atlas mountains, leaving green Morocco behind. We stopped in the Ziz River valley and linked up with a local guide, Tata. We had a home-cooked lunch at his mother's home, followed by a walk through the adjacent agricultural oasis. We then visited a fossil workshop in Erfoud on the way to explore a typical Berber village, Mezguida. It was a while before we realized that our guide, Brahim, was showing us his own childhood village and house. All week we had heard stories about his family & childhood and now we had context! And we met his parents as well!! His mother was from a nomadic family before having an arranged marriage with his father, a teacher. The following day Brahim showed us a small nearby brick and pottery "factory" before dropping us off at Tata's Erg Chebbi house. We watched as our lunch was prepared – Medfouna (aka Berber Calzone).
