Chhattisgarh

After the conclusion of Art Wolfe's tour, one of his colleagues (Gavriel Jecan) lead five of us on an 8 day tour of eastern central India tribal cultures. It had originally been planned as a tour of tribes in the state of Odisha but was later changed to the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh. Apparently Odisha had recently prohibited photographing in some of its tribal areas, so the prudent move was made. I suspect that it was an improvement in another way: Chhattisgarh is seldom visited so we found it quite untouched by the likes of us. However, this also meant that there were few accommodations which necessitated long daily drives to the tribal villages on absolutely insane Indian roads. The traffic chaos was so bad that I often had to close my eyes for much of a drive!
