Rota Vicentina, October 2-6

After spending a short week in and around Lisbon, we headed south to the Vicentina Coast for 5 days of walking along the "Fishermen's Trail", Portugal's Rota Vicentina. We stayed in lovely, quaint inns and we only had to hike with daypacks as our baggage was ferried between the inns. It was all excellently arranged by InnTravel. Here is a link to a map of our route: Rota Vicentia Map.

We had visions of a leisurely stroll along beautiful cliffs and beaches; instead our 5 days turned out to be quite strenuous. Each day was 10-15 miles, with 3 of the days spent walking on cliff-top dunes of deep sand. As a result, most days consisted of more than 6 hours of walking, with little time for drawing, photography, or just "down time." We did have beautiful 80°F weather – the locals said that it was first good weather of the year. And, at the end of each day, we had a beer waiting for us, often next to a pool!
