Maasai Village Visit (October 7)
On the way from Tarangire National Park to Rhotia Valley (just outside Ngorongoro Crater) we visited a Maasai Village just outside the small town of Mto wa Mbu. We learned that each Maasai village was basically one family unit headed by the patriarch/chief having multiple wives. A village's principal economic activity is cattle herding (and selling jewelry to tourists). The children are circumsized when they are around 15 and the boys become junior warriors. Around the age of 25 boys become warriors and can marry, and their first one or two wives are chosen for them. After marriage, they go off and form their own village.
