Pongwe Beach, Zanzibar (October 15-21)

After two very bumpy and dusty weeks on safari, we were ready for some downtime, and Tanzania's Zanzibar Island's white beaches were just the ticket. We stayed at Pongwe Beach Resort for almost six days and enjoyed every minute. The food and accommodations were great and the resort's setting was magnificent. Zanzibar is ringed by a coral reef located about a kilometer offshore. And large 12 foot tides and gently sloping beach make for a huge tranformation twice a day. When the tide is out, Pongwe village's inhabitants stream out onto the exposed sand to fish and tend their seaweed farms.

We also visited a spice farm (Zanzibar is famous for its spices) and spent a day in the island's largest town, Stone Town (infamous as a slave port for East African slaves going to the Middle East in the 1800s).
